Men in grey suits rule – OK!

Why is Bromley Council’s Tory leader so afraid of women?

Once again, Leader of Bromley Council, Councillor Stephen Carr, has overlooked capable women councillors in his own party and appointed only men to his Cabinet at the Council’s Annual Meeting (held on 16 May). This is the eleventh year in succession that Councillor Carr has done so since becoming Leader.

Why is Stephen Carr afraid to appoint women to his Cabinet?

Is it because the spectre of the Iron Lady herself emotionally scarred him in his formative years? Or is it because he worries that he will be outshone by a woman? Or is it because there is self-preservation at stake here and he feels safer surrounded by a Cabinet comprising of people of a similar ilk to himself – men in grey suits.

Yet again, Bromley remains the only London Borough without a woman councillor in the role of Portfolio Holder and in a Cabinet. The unwillingness of Councillor Carr to include a woman in his top team is a sad reflection on his judgement and leadership and sends the wrong message to the women of Bromley.

Clearly the glass ceiling is well and truly embedded in Bromley’s Civic Centre.
